What Is Good Surf?

When you’re learning to surf you’ll spend the majority of your time practising in the white-water BUT as you become more advanced you will need to understand which conditions allow waves to break and peel cleanly. Without a peeling wave you cannot surf properly.

Take Your Marks! Go! (How to Dive of a Starting Block)

Last time, we were discussing the proper streamline during a dive and also some basic exercises to get us more comfortable jumping and diving into the water. Today, we’ll build on top of what we have learned and add a few more diving steps before we move onto a proper start from a block.

When you are comfortable with the sitting dive and squatting dive you can move on to practicing the following exercises. Note of caution, perform the below exercises only in a pool which as a deep end otherwise you are risking an injury by hitting the bottom.

1) Standing pseudo-dive – You are almost there, just a few more drills and you will be able to dive. Here you will require an assistance from someone who is quite strong and can carry some of your weight. If you are teaching your children, you will need to be the one here. Here it goes. Put your feet to the side of the pool (about one foot apart), toes over the edge and your arms in the streamline. Head is between the arms. Now start slowly moving your upper body with you arms towards the water. At this point, the other person who is helping you out will stand next to you and grabs you by the hips from both sides and gently leans you over the water, so you are about to enter, but not enter, because they are holding you. Your feet are still planted on the wall, so the supporting person is only helping you shift weight forward, so you can feel how it is going to be when you do it by yourself. You will end up in a downward “V” with the tip being the top of your butt (on the top). If you are comfortable in this position, you can let the supporting person know and they will let you go, so you can finish the dive. If you are not comfortable, just ask them to bring you back to the vertical position and try it again.

2) Standing dive – This diving drill is basically the same as the one above, except you are going to do this by yourself, therefore, you will have to travel a bit of a longer distance to the water. Let’s start by moving into the streamline position as we discussed in our previous lesson, put your toes over the edge of the water (Note: once again, this is best done where the water sloshes over the edge into the gutter). When you are all set, bend your knees a little and start slowly bending at your upper back and waist towards the water. Depending on your flexibility, you will want to start bending your knees as well, so you can get your fingertips as close to the water as possible. This time, however, do not wait to shift your weight forward until your fingertips touch the water. When your fingertips are pointing about 1/2 meter(yard) from the edge of the pool you can start shifting your weight forward, so you move fingertips first into the water, followed by your nicely tucked in head and then your body. Remember, do not be tempted to look where you are going, just keep your head tucked into your arms and watch your legs. You will enter the water at an angle away from the wall. Just imagine that there is a floating ring on top of the water and your body needs to go through it without touching the sides. Your fingertips go first, then your head and shoulder, chest, hips, knees and then your feet. If you are still unclear, just mouse over the image of the stick figure and you will get some more explanation.

3) Standing dive with an assist – If you find it difficult to do the above standing dive by yourself, you can have your friend help you. The basics are the same as the regular standing dive, except at the time you start to enter the water, your friend or parent will cut your legs from underneath of you. Don’t be scared, this sounds much worse than it is. Instruct your buddy to squat down next to you and put his/her forearm in front of your ankles and when you are entering the water, he/she will simply help you move your legs upward with sweeping their forearm away from the pool toward your legs in a slightly upward motion.

4) Sitting dive from the block – In a similar manner we did the sitting dive drill from the side of the pool, we will do the same from the block. If you feel that the block is still too high at this stage, I suggest you keep practicing from the side of the pool OR usually there is a slightly raised platform next to the starting block which is higher than the regular side of the pool, but still lower than the starting block, so use that as you work your way up to the pool. The most important part here is the head between the arms. If you get scared and do look up where you are diving to, you will more than likely hit a very nice faceplant or you will do a belly flop. Both of these can hurt for a few seconds afterwards, but nothing lethal :) . It is actually good, you experience some small pain, at least it will be a good reminder to keep your head down in the streamline position when entering the water.

5) Standing dive from the block – When you make it all the way to this stage, you are almost ready to have a good swimming start. First, we will, however, do the same exercise as we did during the standing dive from the side of the pool. So put your arms into a streamline, feet next to each other, toes over the edge, bent knees and start bending downwards until you are ready to shift your weight, so you enter the water with your fingertips. I’ll say it again, no matter what happens ( for example: someone calling your name at the side of the pool), KEEP YOUR HEAD IN BETWEEN YOUR ARMS. If this will help you, think of it as if your fingertips made a hole into the water and the rest of your body has to go through that hole, so your body needs to be as small, tight, compact as possible. If you stick your head out, you will hit the side of the hole and it will be a bit painful. For the most common mistakes, mouseover the image of the diving children.

If you have made it through numerous belly flops and faceplants all the way this far, very well done and you are tougher for it. If not, just keep practicing, you will get there, don’t worry. There is a bit more to doing a proper swimming start, but this is for a next more advanced lesson. In the meantime, keep practicing and happy diving.

Thanks very much Richard – this is a fantastic site! I looked at the blog entries you suggested and they are encouraging. Your whole blog is great, I think I’ve read most of it, and the video clips are also really useful; some things have to be seen, not just explained.

I’ve been adding a lap of freestyle to my swims, and did five this morning. My form isn’t great, and it’s still my least favourite stroke, but it gets a bit easier each time! I’ve signed up for an adult stroke improvement class that starts in a few weeks. Thanks again, this site was a great psychological help in deciding to try and swim for fitness, since running is too hard on my knee.

Clear and cold; more coming next week

SATURDAY FEB. 26…..7:26AM…

Tahoe is officially buried, folks. And there is more to come in the week ahead.

We got another 18 inches here at 7000 feet in the past 24 hours, bringing the storm total to right around three feet. The resorts are reporting an extra foot at the peaks at 8000 feet and above. That’s a very credible estimate.

Now the storm has moved mostly south, with clear skies over north Tahoe and a few clouds still lingering to the south. Temperatures dipped below zero overnight in the mountain valleys and into the low single digits at the highway passes. They will warm a bit today but highs will still be 20 degrees or more below normal. Sunday will be warmer while remaining a bit below normal.

We might see a few clouds Monday and a chance of light snow as a system passes to our north. Another, bigger storm looks to come our way mid week, probably Wednesday. This one will be warmer and wetter with snow levels possibly above 6000 or even 7000 feet at the start, then crashing to the foothills as the storm comes through.

After that, it appears we might get another one of these cold storms as an upper low pressure trough migrates from western Canada into the Gulf of Alaska and then spins some energy our way. If that happens, it would be sometime next weekend.

Remember our six week dry spell at the start of the year? Ancient history now.

At 7000 feet:

Chateau DuMont Keytone Resort – A family friendly property

My family and I recently stayed at Chateau DuMont #2723 for the weekend. It was great to be less than 50 yards from the lifts at the Mountain House base (where the lines are much shorter than River Run Village) and a very easy walk to the Keystone Ski school there as well! When I picked our kids up from ski school, I just loaded them and their gear in the big toboggan that we brought with us and pulled them about 100 yards on a snowy path back to our ski condo.

No tired, whiny kids having to walk in ski boots while mom tries to wrestle with skis and keep them walking! There was plenty of space for me, my husband, our 2 children and my best friend who I hadn’t seen in years. Both bedrooms have very comfortable King sized beds which were perfect for a long snooze after a great day of skiing powder at Keystone Resort!  The two bathrooms were nicely updated with new fixtures and tile and both have 2 sinks in them so nobody had to fight for a sink to get ready in the morning. In the master bedroom  there is a jetted bathtub as well.

The kitchen at Chateau DuMont was large and had everything we needed to make early morning breakfasts and tasty dinners in the evening.  Our family decided to pack a quick lunch so we can eat on the picnic tables in Keystone’s outback.   The spice cabinet was very well stocked, and we enjoyed listening to music on the surround sound stereo system in the living room while we cooked! The wood burning fireplace was a favorite and we were all able to lounge on the sectional couch and enjoy the fire while we watched a movie.

Last but certainly not least, is the private hot tub! There is an enclosed hot tub room off of the living room, and what could be better than taking a long soak after a perfect powder day in Keystone Colorado?   We had a great time at Chateau DuMont and would love to stay here again; the location can’t be beat and the accommodations were fabulous. We wish we could have stayed for the whole week!

Copy Xbox Game Using Game Copy Wizard

The most frustrating thing for an Xbox 360 owner, when their game with a scratched and unplayable. And they do not have a backup CD for this game. Most likely, the decision to be made, then buy the game. But we all know, the price of the game DVD is becoming more and more expensive. The game can cost anywhere from $ 50 to $ 200, heavy piece of gaming population of children and adolescents, so the costs are the sum of a big deal for most of them. why do not we just copy the game to disk?, we can save the budget, is not it?, I’m sure it is, but unfortunately we can not do it because of “copyright protection”, which is embedded in encoded game discs, making regular burning software can not recognize the disc.

Is that it? This means that we should buy the game? Calm down buddy, that’s good news. Some companies have a software program designed to allow recognition of the game and the ability to copy Xbox 360 games. Thus, we can copy any Xbox 360 games on any blank DVD on our own. It’s great, is not it? And some software allows you to duplicate not only for games Xbox, they can also be used to duplicate any other game on the PS 3, Wii, PS2, PSP and other consoles. Your computer will analyze the information to the disk drive and copy your Xbox 360 in connection with a specific game video duplication applications. With this kind of software on your computer, you can record a video game at any time.

There are a lot of software that we use to make a backup copy of our Xbox 360 game. But the software that most of my friends recommended me to the writing of this article is the game master copy, they use this software for a long time to backup their games Xbox. And most of them are satisfied, because there are many benefits that they receive in comparison with any other software copy of the game. It is very easy to use. Plug the Xbox 360 game, and your computer will make the image files on your hard drive at this time, put a blank disc into the computer so that the formation moves. You will receive a copy of the Xbox 360 game in about 20-40 minutes. You can also read an overview of the software on my last article here, and get a discount price if you want to buy this software.

But we do not make it to gamers to record the names of games they do not belong. It is legal to burn Xbox 360 games to protect them from loss or scratches. There is nothing worse than losing a game you have only because of accidental scratches.

So now, you still feel frustrated when your Xbox 360 game is damaged and aspirin? You already know the solution is not it?
