Different Types of Sailing Lessons

Any person can become an experienced sailor with advanced sailing lessons from a good training centre. These are important to learn how to sail and to help them enjoy their tryst with the water.

Most of the training centers have classified these courses into three different categories. These categories include basic, intermediate and advanced lessons. They are elaborated below:

Basic lessons

Basic lessons are meant to make cruise safe in local waters as well as moderate wind. About 5 days of live-aboard classes teaches handling of boats under power and sail. Other basic lessons include boat safety, anchoring, navigation and seamanship.

Intermediate lessons

Intermediate lessons usually deals or lays emphasis on on-the-water skills required for bareboat chartering. It also checks or masters the skills that were taught in basic cruising courses. Apart from these, intermediate sailing lessons also deals latest anchoring techniques, passage planning, emergency procedures, navigation skills, radio procedures, electronic navigation, boat systems as well as boat maintenance.

Advanced lessons

Advanced lessons are directed to make one capable skipper who can crew an 8-15 meter cruise. Other objectives are to make one capable of operating boat day and night in inland or coastal waters and in any weather.

They teach sail theory, passage planning, night sailing, emergency procedures, weather systems and much more. Certificate is awarded to learners after a particular course and the certificate is provided after evaluating skills of the individual.

Almost every school is concentrating on these three latest forms to offer the best training to the enthusiasts and eager students.

Capt Mac’s School of Seamanship is a sailing school in Vancouver which offers 5-7 days of sailing training for individuals. It has been serving enthusiasts since 1983 and has certified several students with its advanced live-aboard sailing lessons in Vancouver, BC.

Three feet Thursday; showers today and one more storm coming

A low pressure system that dumped more than three feet of new snow on parts of Tahoe is moving east this morning, but scattered snow showers and high winds continue to make conditions hazardous throughout the region.

Snow with this system peaked as expected late Thursday, when for several hours snow fell at a rate approaching three inches per hour. Visibility was near zero. Interstate 80 was closed through the Sierra from early Thursday afternoon through this morning as plow drivers could not see well enough to do their jobs.

Kingvale reported 28 inches of new snow on Thursday, while Sugarbowl reported 24 to 36 inches. Boreal has now received more than 700 inches this season, a record for the resort. Overall, this is shaping up to be one of the top three snowiest seasons since 1970.

Snow showers should lighten this afternoon and tonight, and the winds will be dying down, but one more storm is due on Saturday. This one will be puny compared to the recent systems, with about 6 inches at lake level and perhaps 12 to 18 inches at the higher elevations. Snow will ease to showers late Saturday but might continue into Sunday. A storm headed our way on Sunday looks to deliver only a glancing blow, perhaps a few showers but fairly little accumulation.

After that a ridge of high pressure will begin to build across the area and spring will be upon us.

Two more storms, 3 to 4 feet coming

UPDATE 2. The National Weather Service is reporting that Kingvale at 6000 feet on Interstate 80 received 28 inches of snow between 8 an and 9 pm Thursday, on top of 20 inches on Wednesday and Wednesday night…..I-80 has been closed since early this afternoon due to low visibility…Snow will be tapering to showers overnight.

UPDATE…..A wild winter storm has moved into the Sierra today, with high winds and heavy snowfall rates that have brought closures to every major highway in the region. Interstate 80, Highway 50, Highway 88 and Highway 89 all had closures in effect this afternoon, and the heaviest snowfall is yet to come. We could see snow falling at a rate of 3 inches per hour later this afternoon and tonight. Look for three feet at the mountain passes by Friday afternoon, with a bit more coming in with a smaller storm on Saturday….

March 24, 2011

It’s going to be another snowy weekend in Tahoe.

Two more storms are about to slam into the Sierra, and combined they could dump another two to three feet of snow at 7000 feet, with even more on the highest peaks around the region.

The first system is moving in this morning. It is forecast to drop two inches of liquid equivalent precipitation on Tahoe’s peaks today and Friday. With snow to water ratios of about 15 to 1 at 7000 feet, we should see at least two feet of new snow by Friday morning. This storm is expected to peak this afternoon and evening with snowfall rates of 2 inches to 3 inches per hour for several hours. When that heavy snowfall combines with the high winds forecast for the same period — gusts of 100 mph are possible — white-out conditions are likely to result. We would not be surprised to see Interstate 80 and Highway 50 close down for several hours tonight.

Snow levels should drop to below 4000 feet overnight, perhaps as low as 2000 feet in some areas. But the intensity of the snowfall will lighten overnight, tapering to showers by Friday afternoon.

After a brief lull — and those showers might continue right through it — a second storm is due by Saturday morning. This system will not be as strong as Thursday’s storm, but it will still be wet enough to deposit another foot or so of new snow at 7000 feet. Snow should taper to showers Saturday night, with a few scattered showers lingering into Sunday.

Yet another storm is possible Sunday afternoon, but the jet stream is trending north and by then that storm may deliver little more than a glancing blow on Tahoe. Certainly compared to what we have seen of late the Sunday storm will seem like a bli if it arrives at all.

Either way, we should begin to see a ridge of high pressure building early next week that will allow us to to dry out and dig out. By Wednesday we should be the beginning of a warming trend that will feel very much like Spring.

But in the meantime brace yourselves for a big one today and tonight.

Snow tonight, Wednesday

TUESDAY MARCH 22 7:09 AM….

Two and possibly three winter-style storms are poised to usher spring into the Sierra and the Tahoe Basin this week. We should see several feet of new snow by the weekend.m
The first is due to arrive Tuesday night and will peak Wednesday morning. It has the potential to deliver one to two feet of snow above 7000 feet, with about a foot below 7000 feet. It’s potential as a snow producer will be limited somewhat by its southwest orientation, but that should be an issue mostly for the eastern slope. Along the crest we should feel the full brunt of this system.

Snow showers are forecast to linger through most of the day Wednesday before a brief lull on Thursday as the next storm moves into position. That system is forecast to arrive late Thursday into Friday. It will be tapping into a similar amount of moisture as the first storm but its track across the Sierra will give it a more favorable orientation for dropping snow on the entire Tahoe Basin. It has the potential to bring us another two to three feet of snow at the higher elevations around the region.

The third storm is due Saturday afternoon or Saturday night. At the moment this one looks to be the weakest of the three, but as of now it is still on track to bring us additional snow. We will keep our eye on that one as the first two make their way through the mountains.

Stay tuned for details.

Snow showers today; next storm Tuesday night

MONDAY MARCH 21 7:59 AM….

An upper level trough of low pressure that brought two storms and about six feet of snow to Tahoe’s Peaks over the weekend has moved mostly south and east of the Sierra this morning, leaving scattered snow showers in its wake. The showers should taper off by late today, and Tuesday should be clear to partly cloudy.

But that respite will be brief, as another series of storms is lining up in the Gulf of Alaska and taking aim at Tahoe. We could see another 3 to 4 feet of snow this week, possibly more at the higher elevations around the region.

The first system in this series is due to arrive late Tuesday night and bring snow into Wednesday. Snow levels will remain below 6000 feet and probably far below that, at least on Wednesday as the front moves through. Look for about a foot of snow out of this system at 7000 feet.

After what might be another short lull, a second, more powerful system is on track for late Thursday into Friday. This one could bring another 1 to 3 feet of snow to the region by Friday night.

Yet another system is in the mid-range forecast for Saturday night or Sunday. But the forecast models are in conflict with this system and it’s not clear yet whether it will hang off the coast as it drifts south or sweep across the Sierra and bring us yet another major dump.

Stay tuned for details.

Cricket Bowling Tips And Hints
 by: Ian Canaway

When bowling in cricket there are many possible cricket tips or hints that can help improve your bowling.

In bowling, a combination of natural ability, good technique and practice is the recipe for good bowling, whether it is fast, slow or spin.

Here are some tips that will help your bowling and when implemented correctly your bowling speed:

The basic grip to hold the ball is to keep the seam vertical and to hold the ball with your index finger and middle finger either side of the seam with the side of your thumb resting on the seam underneath the ball.

In your approach/run in, try to stay:

- Smooth,

- Balanced,

- Economical,

- Rhythmical,

- Consistent and stay relaxed and try not to tense up.

During your approach and action, your head position is very important. Make sure that as you approach the wicket you are running at a steady, consistent speed, and increase strides. Aim to keep your head as steady and level as possible, looking towards your target.

Pull your front arm down and through the target area, making sure you complete the delivery with a full follow through.

Try to keep everything in the same direction, towards your target, keep your hips and shoulders parallel/in-line, and follow through the delivery in the direction where you intend the ball to go.

Also as a bowler it is very important to stay in great shape, as you’ll enjoy the game more and perform better in the latter stages if you have good stamina. So incorporating some light weight sessions in to your training is important.

Also aim to try and run 3 times a week to keep your cardiovascular system in top condition and to improve your stamina. South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, is well know for running 10Km every morning, even on match days!

But make sure you consult your coach/doctor/gym instructor before starting any sessions.
