Rain, light snow possible tonight

Friday April 22 6:14 AM….

A somewhat dreary weather week for the Tahoe Basin looks to continue into this weekend, and possibly beyond. We’re in a period of cool, showery weather, with storms too warm and weak to produce much snowfall but wet enough to be a nuisance to skiers, riders and others hoping to get out and enjoy spring conditions on the slopes and elsewhere.

Another weak system is due to move into the Sierra tonight, bringing chilly drizzle to parts of the region and a dusting of snow above about 7000 feet. Don’t expect much accumulation, though.

Two more waves similar to this one are on track for Saturday and Sunday, likely keeping conditions gray with possible rain showers. It looks as if the weekend systems will stay mostly north of Tahoe, so with any luck we will be getting some clouds but no rain.

A stronger system is on tap for Monday, followed by some drying, then potentially another one for either Wednesday or Thursday.

The long term forecast at this point looks dry for next weekend.

Sunday 43

Rain, snow possible tonight

WEDNESDAY APRIL 20 7:54 AM….

Two weak low pressure systems are moving through the Tahoe region this week.

The first one will move through the Northern Sierra late today and bring a chance of light rain and snow to Tahoe and gusty winds. A high wind advisory has been posted for Lake Tahoe. Snow levels will be around 7000 feet today, dropping to 6000 feet tonight or early Thursday. Later Thursday the cold front will pass through Tahoe and snow levels should drop to 5000 feet. But there won’t be much accumulation out of this system. Just a few inches at the higher elevations and maybe a dusting around the Lake.

An even weaker system is forecast to move through Friday and Saturday.

Temperature forecasts:

Tahoe City:

Wednesday 50
Thursday 45
Friday 47

7000 feet

5 Ways To Make A Sailing Trip Safe

We usually hear about adventures in sailing as somebody’s boat went under and he was found floating in the ocean for 30 days living on fish and plankton. Unfortunately, regular successful sailing does not make great news. It will take a few trips, but many realize that a sailboat with an experienced crew can handle a lot. Here are just a few pointers for people just introduced to sailing to make their trip safe…

1. You must be sensible enough to check your local weather before you set sail. Source of information be it radio, coast guard forecasts and television, reckoning of weather conditions is an absolute must. Being observant, rough winds and volatile waves as well as darkening of the clouds are a crystal clear signal for you to be safe and set sail for another day.

2. Have a checklist and check it twice. Preparation is one basic safety procedure that minimizes risks in any activity. In sailing sense, it is the epitome of proper boating safety. PFD’s, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, as well as checking the boat for any sign of wear and tear that will affect your sailing experience.

3. When common sense is uncommon. Using commonsense when it is needed is much neglected in sailing, thus being one of the “common” causes of sailing mishaps. Operate at acceptably safe speeds; be observant and aware of small or large vessels that could be in your path. Pay attention and follow navigational warnings and buoys that are there for you and other co-sailors. Do have the commonsense to avoid alcohol. Safety is doubly at risk when there is alcohol involved, this goes for both skipper and passenger. A clear perception of the forces and elements of nature is much utilized in sailing so keep your head free of any hallucinogenic substances.

Commonsense in sailing takes on a lot of details as to what and what not to do in sailing. Here are some and surely others will come to mind as you read along.

Dare not to dare. The activity of sailing is impressive enough so there is no need to impress your friends or family that you may have on board. Daredevil acts may be cool to watch not until you find yourself in a compromising situation that can put you and others in danger.

Lifejackets are intended to be used and not as a boat ornament to make the vessel look safe. It may be cool to have your pectorals flexing as you sail, but PFD’s can make it more safer should you go overboard while projecting your buff bod.

4. Inform people of your route plan and have it listed with your local coast guard or marina personnel. The route or passage plan is the course that you will be travelling on and the number of days that you intend to be out at sea. Information that you should share includes your personal information and that of your passengers. The boat type, itinerary, safety equipment and communication should also be included in your trip notice.

It is wise to have a support skipper. Two heads are better than one and with sailing it is pertinent that your assistant skipper is equally familiar with sailing.

5. Learn how to swim. You are embarking on an activity that is surrounded by water. Having swimming skills can be very handy in time of need; you never know when you might be knocked over or slip over board.

Anything else that you need to remember may be inculcated during your sailing lessons or orientation. Sailing is a dangerous activity if you go unprepared in attitude, body and intellect. For others who have a firm grasp of what it takes to sail safely, the activity can be smooth sailing.

Don’t let your computer take over your body posture, Go For a Swim!

Nowadays, computer skills are almost as common in the every day work life as lunch breaks. With this advancement in technology, however, come also negative side effects in the face of very bad habits, especially when it comes to our back posture.

Feel the calm water

I know I am guilty of it. Even right now when I write this post my back is slouching over. Even though I try to eliminate it by sitting on a stability ball and once in a while catch myself in the bad posture and try to correct it, I still do have a bad posture when I am engulfed into something I do on a computer. I don’t mean to preach to you about how to sit in front of your computer, there are many ergonomic tips you can incorporate into your computer work (for example: the chair type), but what I’d like you to realize is that you can give your spine and body a needed break by going swimming during your lunch break or after work. You do not need to have a complicated workout for hours and hours. Fifteen to thirty minutes are enough to get your body back into the right alignment.

Here is a bit more incentive for you to get you to your local swimming pool.

Swimming as a whole is one of the healthiest sports out there. What it means is that whether you swim for recreational purposes or train for competition, your body is subdued to a lot smaller amount of stress than in any exercise on dry land. Thus in turn, reducing the chance of an injury. Don’t take me wrong, there are injuries from swimming, but they are a lot less frequent than in other sports and usually due to a bad swimming technique which of course you do not have since you are reading this blog.

During swimming, your body is lifted up through its buoyancy, so the gravitational force feels much weaker than on land, so your muscles are loosened up more than they would be outside of the water. When you swim your spine is more relaxed than when you walk. In addition to that, your joints of upper and lower limbs are not overloaded as in running for example. This is also why swimming is frequently used and recommended for rehabilitation purposes. Furthermore, swimming can be also relaxing for the mind where the water acts as a therapeutic element.

During your regular work day, it is recommended to lay down for a few minutes on the ground to let your spine re-align and relax the supporting muscles. There are many programs that teach you the right way to move and relax, for example the Alexander Technique, however, I’d say, why not just jump into your local pool and get the most out of both worlds, wonderful body and mind relaxation in one package. And as a positive side effect, you will also increase your stamina and core body strength and learn or improve a life saving skill, swimming.

Did I now convince you that swimming is wonderful? It is not just a sport, but also a way of life, relaxation and I’d even dare to say a certain level of meditation. When I swim and feel the water flowing over my body, I feel re-energized and sometimes when I have a hard decision to make in my life, going swimming helps me with clearing my head of all the distractions which makes it easier to weigh all the options later. When you run or cycle, there are many distractions around, you have to watch where you step, perhaps check for traffic or listen to the world’s noises, but when you swim, all that is gone, the only thing you have to worry about is not hitting the wall and that is eliminated when you are in a lake. I’ve solved mathematical or computer science problems which I was previously stuck in during swimming, I’ve figured out how to behave in certain unpleasant situations and I’ve even sang the entire Beatles albums while stroking away from wall to wall. Ok, the last one is not true as I don’t really know the lyrics, but I do play a tune in my head during some longer swims to keep my rhythm going. (Note: To improve in swimming, you will need to engage your mind and repeat the correct movements many many times until they become subconscious. So don’t you go singing Beatles songs just yet.:) When that happens, you will enjoy swimming so much more.)

I think if everyone would experience swimming as I have described it above, the swimming pools would be always overflowing and everyone would be very well verse in swimming:). Reality is a bit more complicated though. If you think that you cannot feel that way, you probably just need some help with your swimming stroke. If you are having trouble relaxing your body in the water, the proper body position lesson should get you started.
