Snow possible next week

September 29 2011

Now that fall is here, winter is right around the corner. Perhaps even next week.

After a cooler and windy but still mild weekend, the first winter-like storm of the season will be on Tahoe’s front porch by Monday. A series of low-pressure systems moving through Northern California will bring a chance of rain and, later in the week, snow to the Tahoe Basin.

For this weekend, look for temperatures to drop back toward normal with gusty afternoon winds and a chance of thunderstorms, especially Friday and Saturday, and more likely south of Tahoe.

Sunday and Monday will be transition days, as the saummer-fall thunderstorm pattern gives way to a more winter-like storm coming to us from the north Pacific and the Gulf of Alaska. A Pacific trough of low pressure is forecast to set up off the coast of California by Tuesday, bringing cooler temperatures to the Sierra, with rain possible in the Northern mountains and perhaps a few showers as far south as Tahoe.

The most powerful in this series of storms is due on Wednesday. This storm is expected to be laden with moisture and following a trajectory toward the mountains that will make for favorable precipitation conditions. The forecast is suggesting that two inches of rain at Blue Canyon on Interstate 80 is a reasonable possibility, with snow levels starting out near 8000 feet before dropping to around 7000 feet late in the storm, either Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

Most of the precipitation might move east before the blast of northern air drops temperatures low enough for snow, but there is still a good chance we could see accumulations around the highway passes and even lower on Wednesday night or Thursday.

Stay tuned to www.tahoeloco.com for updates as these storms approach.

Top 10 Sailing Tips

1. Take care of your boat and the sails. Wash the sails with mild soap and water after sailing. Keep them out of the sun and fold the sail neatly when dry. Clean your boat to avoid transferring possible invasive plant or shellfish species to other sailing locations.

2. Check the weather, wind and tide before you go sailing. Start watching the weather a week before you go out. Record wind, type of clouds and how each weather type encountered impacts your sailing.

3. Be prepared for emergencies. Keep your life jackets (PFDs) in good condition and have one for each person on the boat. Make sure you have first aid supplies in a waterproof box.

4. If you are just learning to sail, start with a smaller sized boat with one sail and practice sailing in calm water where there are not a lot of people.

5. Practice capsizing your boat. Think of this like the fire drills you did in school.

6. Develop your sailing vocabulary. From weather terminology to vocabulary specific to sailing, the better you know this, the easier it will be to communicate with your crew. Learn proper sailing etiquette.

7. Practice adjusting the sails to take advantage of the different wind conditions.

8. Do not overestimate your abilities. Do not sail in rough water unless you know what you are doing. You could wind up in trouble. Make sure someone on land knows your plans before you go out sailing.

9. Watch out for the boom. You don’t want to get hit in the head or possibly thrown overboard. Make sure your crew and passengers are aware of when the boom is going to swing.

10. Watch for other boats and keep control of your own boat by making sure you are sailing at a safe speed.

How hard is it to learn to sail?

I've always had an interest to learn how to sail. I'm 33 catch on quick and very enthusiastic when I get into something. It's a life long dream to learn how to sail. How long does it take to master? How long before I feel comfortable to rent a boat and sail the open waters say off of British Columbia..whale watching and island hopping?
