Tips When Sailing in San Francisco

Going sailing in San Francisco is a perfect way to have a peaceful and quiet time cruising around the city. Since it is located at the Bay Area, visitors are given the chance to go on a boat and take an adventure.

San Francisco is generally a sea-loving community being geographically situated along the coast of California. There are many things you can do within the city, but going sailing with the family is activity that everybody can enjoy. Visitors can take trips going around Alcatraz to witness the beautiful body of water surrounding the city. There are boats located in the famous Pier 39 at the Fisherman’s Wharf.

Sailing is always a fun activity but some people often neglect the basic guidelines. In order to ensure you get the most out of your trip here are a few reminders. In the end, you’ll not only be safer, but you’ll enjoy the trip more.

When sailing in San Francisco, it is always important to wear a life vest or a life jacket. Don’t underestimate the importance of wearing one because anything might happen while riding a boat. In that same vest, carry along a whistle and a mirror or a high powered light. The whistle should be like a police whistle or something that produces a loud sound. This equipment placed on the vest can send out a signal for people to hear you in case you happen to go overboard. The light will be useful especially at night so that nearby sailors can come after you.

The clothes you wear also play a part when sailing. The best clothes to wear would be bright coloured and very warm. The clothes will keep you warm once you set out to sea. The water is more often than not cooler than the temperature in the land. Also, in case you fall in the water, they will provide sufficient heat. The bright colours on your clothes will let other sailors see you in case your boat capsizes. After taking note of the clothes, put on accessories like a hat or a pair of sunglasses. Sailing is a good way to experience the cool breeze and the warm sun, but it could also result into sunburn. Avoid damaging your skin by wearing a hat or putting on sunblock.

The wind is also an essential factor that should not be forgotten. The wind will most likely determine the speed you are going. It is important to maintain the speed in order for you to control the boat. Take note whether the winds are low or high. You’ll have an easier time when the wind is not blowing too hard.

One of the best ways to spend your vacation is by going sailing in San Francisco. You can take a cruise, borrow a ship, or charter your own yacht. There are many shipping and sailing companies available in the docks of the Bay Area. Just remember these tips and you’ll be able to enjoy a wonderful time sailing in the beautiful waters of San Francisco.

Swimming with Little Britain (David Walliams vs. Thames swim marathon)

I love the Little Britain comedy show and the humor the main comedians David Walliams and Matt Lucas bring us with their other sketch comedy endeavors. You don’t see very many celebrities joining the swimming crowd, therefore, I was quite excited when I saw that David Walliams is putting on a charity event to swim for 8 days for 140 miles (225 km) through the river Thames in England. I mean, can you imagine swimming that far in 8 days? He is definitely not a lady :) . Not even Olympic athletes…

Why Swimming The English Channel Should Stay (Keeping the La Manche monster alive)

Swimming is not a much talked about sport on TV unless Michael Phelps, Ian Thorpe, Mark Spitz or one of your local swimmer superstars create some unusual hype such as for example the expected clash of the titans (Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe) at the next 2012 Olympic Games in London. Once in a while, however, there is some news regarding more extraordinary swimming events which take place around the globe. One of those swimming attractions is the English Channel crossing. Ocean Navigation Secrets – Seven Fun Facts for Sailing Navigation

Have you often wondered how the sun or moon could help you in small cruising boat ocean navigation? Did you know that you can even use your knowledge of the sun to help you dock a boat? Here are seven little known secrets to keep tucked away in your nautical sea chest of knowledge:

1. Use a sun compass for direction

In the northern hemisphere, the sun bears due south at the time of true noon. During daylight savings time, this occurs about an hour later. In a pinch, note the time when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. It then bears due south. In the southern hemisphere, the sun bears due north at true noon.

2. Sunrise and sunset compass direction

The sun rises due east and sets due west in late March and September. These times are called “equinoxes”, or days of equal light and darkness. Afterwards, the sun no longer rises or sets due east or due west.

From March to September, the sun rises and sets north of east and west.

From September to March, the sun rises and sets south of east and west.

3. Shadow rotation secrets

Check the direction of shadow rotation to find your hemisphere location. North of the equator, shadows from stationary objects move clockwise. South of the equator, shadows from stationary objects move counterclockwise.

4. Sun movement and time

The sun moves about 15 degrees in one hour. That breaks down to about one degree every four minutes. Extend your arm and make a horizontal fist. This equals 8 degrees, or about 30 minutes of sun travel. Use this to find the amount of time until the sun sets.

a. Make a horizontal fist, extend it and place the bottom of the fist onto the horizon.

b. Set your other fist on top.

c. Walk your fists up one another until you cover the upper edge of the sun.

Example:

3 fists from the horizon means you have about 90 minutes (1½ hours) until sunset.

1 fist means you have about 30 minutes left until sunset.

5. Period of twilight gives extra time

Just before sunrise or after sunset, you have a short period called twilight. This gives you an extra 22 minutes of light, twice a day! If you need to dock a boat or set a boat anchor, it’ll be easier and less stressful if you finish up before twilight ends.

6. Moonrise time estimates

Find the time of moonrise from the weather page of a newspaper, or use a nautical almanac. Then, just add 50 minutes each day henceforth. Jot down the time of moonrise in your sailboat log. Add 50 minutes to the previous day’s log entry to find the time of moonrise for today.

7. Moon illumination tells you direction

If the moon rises before sunset, the illuminated side points to the west. If the moon rises after the sunset, the illuminated side points to the east.

********************

Now you know how these seven secrets can help you on any small sailboat cruise or even in emergency navigation. The sun and moon will always be there, waiting to guide you on your way, when less reliable equipment fails.
