Tuesday Feb. 28

Monday’s quick but productive storm left 10 to 12 inches of snow above 7000 feet in North Tahoe and up to 16 inches in the Carson Range. The snow was dry, with a water content below 5 percent. And the next one will be even bigger, if not better.

A low pressure system dropping south out of the Gulf of Alaska is forecast to cross into the Sierra late this afternoon or tonight. This system is tapping into about an inch of precipitable waters, with good snow-to-water ratios. So we’re looking at two to three feet of new snow above 7000 feet with significant accumulations all the way down to 3000 feet, and at least a dusting, and possibly more, as low as 2000 feet.

The heaviest snowfall should be between midnight tonight and noon on Wednesday, and it will be accompanied by high winds. But widespread snow showers are likely to persist into Thursday, and will be aided by a secondary wave of energy that could sweep through the area Thursday morning.

A ridge of high pressure is forecast to rebuild on Friday and dry us out for the weekend.

Monday, Feb. 27

UPDATE: Yes! Finally, a storm that’s delivered more than promised, rather than less. This system stalled over the Sierra this morning and a dusting turned into a little bit of a dump. It looks like we have about 8 to 12 inches of new snow above 7000 feet, and it’s still falling in some places around the Basin. The next one is due late Tuesday and it is still on track to dump even more. And it will be cold through Friday. This is going to be a very good week, perhaps the best of the season.

Winter returns to Tahoe today with a cold, fast-moving storm that should bring us a heavy dusting of snow, with up to four inches possible above 7000 feet.

After a brief break on Tuesday, a much more powerful storm is on track to arrive by early Wednesday morning.

This system has the potential to drop nearly an inch of precipitation, measured in water content equivalent, which means we should see more than a foot of snow at the higher elevations. Snow levels will be around 3000 to 4000 feet.

The storm is likely to continue throughout the day on Wednesday and linger into Thursday as a second wave pushes some lingering snow showers into the region.

The high pressure builds again at the end of the week to set up what should be a glorious weekend.

Specialized Care

It is important for women to be honest with themselves about addiction. Research shows a large number of women who develop an addiction to drugs or alcohol in their lifetimes also have some form of mental illness. This could manifest itself in many dangerous ways. A woman could be suffering from post-traumatic stress, an eating disorder, or any other condition that might predispose her to a drug addiction in the future. It is imperative for women in this situation to seek counsel as soon as possible. Otherwise, their addiction to drugs and alcohol could spiral out of control. The best solution is dual diagnosis rehab.

Family

Another issue that many women have to contend with when it comes to treatment for their addiction is their family. Often women are single parents, and have no care for their children. Recently in New Jersey, rehab centers have begun offering on-site childcare. Perhaps if more rehabilitation centers offered such services mothers who need help can get it and ultimately become better mothers and stop the cycle of addiction in their family.

Dangers Of Addiction

Unfortunately, anyone can succumb to an addiction to drugs or alcohol. It can destroy a life very easily. With women it is common that there are underlying reasons for a drug addiction to manifest itself. If a women has experienced something traumatic in their lives that makes them experience feelings of guilt, shame, or pain this can very easily led to a dependence on drugs or alcohol. It is imperative for women to realize that there are programs out there that are customized for their individual needs. Hopefully, more and more rehabilitation centers will do a better job of providing child care services for women who are single mothers and badly need help for a drug addiction.

It’s not spring, yet, folks, even if it has felt that way for much of the winter.

Tahoe’s weather is about to return to a wintery pattern, just in time for March.

A modest, fast-moving but cold storm tonight and Monday should leave us with a healthy dusting of new snow, with perhaps up to 4 inches at the higher elevations.

After a brief break, a much more significant system is on track for a late Tuesday or early Wednesday arrival. This one is tapping into close to an inch of moisture, and with cold temperatures, that could very well translate into a foot or more of snow above 7000 feet.

Snow showers will likely continue into Thursday and Friday as a third, weaker system slides by to the east.

Next weekend is looking fair in the early forecast.

Wednesday, Feb. 22

Tahoe is basking today under mostly sunny skies and warm, springlike temperatures.

Highs today along the lake will be in the mid-50s, and after a brief cooling Thursday, highs will again be pushing into the 50s on Friday.

But a trough of low pressure is setting up over the Pacific Northwest that is forecast to bring cooler temperatures and a slight chance of precipitation to the region by this weekend.

A strong, cold and fast-moving system is on track to move through the region Friday night into Saturday.

This system is likely to send temperatures back to normal for this time of year and probably 10 to 15 degrees below normal. The cold temperatures will be accompanied by high winds and a chance of snow, especially in the Northern Sierra. Unfortunately this system will be fairly dry, so accumulations will be light.

But the storm door will remain open. The ridge of high pressure over the Pacific is shifting west and is forecast to reset in a spot that would allow storm systems to make their way down the Pacific Coast.

Look for temperatures to remain below normal into next week with another brush-by storm Monday and the possibility of an actual winter storm with measurable snow by the middle of next week.
