Seychelles – Tips For A Sailing Vacation

Seychelles is one of the most interesting sailing destinations in the world. With 150 lush and green islands, this area is well suited to inter-island cruising. You can anchor at wonderful beaches as well as discover parts of the archipelago normally not reachable by other visitors.

Seychelles is an archipelago close to Africa that is very rich with flora and fauna. Almost 50 percent of the entire country is made into reserves and marine parks. There are also unique species of trees, shrubs, and living creatures that are to be found in the different islands. The island nation is also blessed with warm climate all year round, as well as sandy beaches and deep-blue waters. Sailing in Seychelles therefore is one thing you’d love to do once you’re there.

Sailing in Seychelles becomes possible if you take a yacht charter from Port Victoria. This is the harbor you can find in the capital city of the country. It’s also a gateway to other interesting mainland sights of the country, such as the clock tower, which is reminiscent of the Little Ben of London. You can also take a trip to the botanical gardens, or the national museum of history. There is also a national stadium nearby, where a lot of popular festivities of the country are being celebrated. The port is also well known for exporting main products of Seychelles such as coconuts, vanilla, tortoise shell, and guano.

Mahe is a popular destination for those who are into water activities during their vacation. Known to be the largest island in Seychelles, almost all points in the area have a lot of things to offer to their guests. For example, you have the Turtle Bay and Anse Aux Pins. The coastline covers southeastern portion of the island. There are several shallow waters and sandy beaches, where you can simply relax and have some time swimming or snorkeling. Along the area, you can also find some rock pools, which are actually filled with numerous marine species. This is a very ideal activity to do during low tide. Beau Vallon, on the other hand, is the most popular beach resort for a variety of reasons. You can choose to swim or charter a boat that will take you to other islands. There are also a number of hotels, where you can stay for a day or two.

There are also 72 low-lying atolls that make up the Outer islands. They are located quite far from the Seychelles Plateau, which then defines the inner islands. They are less commonly visited compared to those that belong to the inner islands, simply because the outer ones are situated farther and are more remote. Yet if you want to really explore the wildlife and the natural habitats of Seychelles, visiting one or two of them will be a good choice. Good examples will be Desroches and Alphonse. These islands also offer superior and luxurious lodges, as well as great opportunities for swimming, diving, and sailing.

The many islands are better experienced when you go sailing in Seychelles. Nevertheless, make sure that you bring your snorkeling and diving equipment with you. After all, you don’t want to miss out the many diving, snorkeling, and swimming spots.

Tips On a Sailing Holiday in Croatia

The country of Croatia, which is officially called as “Republika Hrvatska”, is situated in south-central Europe in the Adriatic coast’s northeastern region. In the group of the Balkan states, it is located in the west-central section. Croatia’s major territories include the Croatia proper, Istria (majority of its land area), Slavonia, and Dalmatia. The country is divided into 21 administrative constituencies. Its coastline, which is great for sailing, stretches as far as 3,000 miles long.

If you want to sail in Croatia’s southern regions, start your journey in the port of Dubrovnik. It is one of Croatia’s most visited tourist attractions, especially by yacht enthusiasts, because of its close proximity to Adriatic Sea. The city of Dubrovnik, which has a population of about 45,000, is also a cultural center because of its medieval urban walls, historic Rector Palace, and remarkable old-fashioned convents. I highly recommend that you take a couple of days of your charter and stay in a local hotel in the city. As a general guide you should regard Split to Dubrovnik as a minimum of a one week trip and allow two weeks if you want to start and finish in the same marina.

Aside from Dubrovnik, yacht charter Croatia include the ports of Zadar, Baska Voda, Vodice, Split, Pula, Biograd, Kastela, Porec, Rovinj, and Marina.

Pula is a city situated in the country’s northwest region along the Adriatic Sea. It has a population of approximately 58,000 people. Pula is one of Croatia’s major port areas. It is also an industrial center. The city is very Roman in culture and tradition because it was a former colony of Rome in 178 B.C. At present, Pula has still preserved some of its ancient Roman architectures. The most famous are the Roma and Augustus temples built during the 1st century A.D., the Arch of the Sergii, and the Porta Aurea triumphal arch constructed in 1st century B.C. Aside from this, the cool blue beaches of the city has made Pula a very attractive tourist center in the country.

Sailing in Croatia is available almost everywhere. Typically, you can sail the country’s shores 365 days a year. But, the best time to cruise the Croatian coast is from the months of April (spring season) to October (autumn season). During this period, the weather is so nice and the sea relatively calm. However, the spring season sometimes has rain showers. Nevertheless, with the country’s approximately 3,000-mile long coastline and 1,180 islands, you can never have enough of Croatia’s coasts.

One of Croatia’s gorgeous coasts is located in Kvarner. It has been attributed by many sailors and tourists because of its stunning coastline and rugged mountain range. The place also has a very flattering and mild climate. Because of this, many visitors have judged Kvarner as a very suitable place to have a vacation. Most of the place’s tourists are upper class or elite individuals.

Sailing rules question on rights?

Sailing rules question on rights?

Here is a scenario in which I am unsure about the rules:
Ok, so my sister was sailing an Opti downwind alongside another Opti girl (this was during a race).
I think, but am not sure, that the other girl had rights (she was either starboard or leeward of my sister).
Now, here's the big question: The 2 girls were pretty close to each other, close enough that my sister's boom touched the other girl's PONYTAIL. The other girl protested my sister and made her do turns. But, did she really have to?
In other words, where is the boundaries of any part of a boat with no rights in hitting another boat in order for there to be a penalty?

Sailing Rope Tips – How to Heave a Line With Pinpoint Accuracy!

How many times have you needed to heave a line a long distance to a dock or to another boat? How far could you heave a line to a person in the water? Make this sailing rope skill one of your top priorities on your small cruising boat. Follow these five easy steps for super accuracy…

1. Make the coil

Use small diameter nylon or dacron line. If you are going to pass a heavy dock line, attach the smaller line to the eye of the docking line. Coil 100 feet of small line clockwise. Make sure it’s free of knots so that it goes out in a smooth, easy motion.

2. Break the coil

Hold the coil in your non-dominant hand. Pick up one third to one half of the coil with your dominant hand. Keep the bitter end of the dominant-hand coil on the outside of the coil to insure that it pays out without knots.

3. Turn and sight

Turn so that your non-dominant shoulder faces the objective. Sight over your shoulder and focus your concentration on a point just above and upwind of the dock, boat, or person.

4. Swing the line

Hold your non-dominant hand with the palm up and open. This will allow the heaving line to feed out of that hand. Swing the coil in the dominant hand down by your side in a forward-aft motion. This will put velocity into the line as you throw it.

5. Heave the line

Throw the line underhand to a close target where you need pin-point accuracy. When heaving to a boat, use a side arm or overhead throw to gain height and increase the distance of the toss.

********************

Follow these steps to heave any line with pin-point accuracy. Boost your sailing rope skills to the next level with practice, preparation, and proper technique.
