More unsettled weather ahead for Tahoe this week.
Today should be clearing after some isolated snow showers along the Crest.
A deep area of low pressure in the Eastern Pacific is forecast to send several waves of energy into the Pacific Northwest, with some of that moisture reaching the Northern Sierra.
The first wave will be tonight, bringing snow and rain to far Northern California.
The next pulse is due Tuesday afternoon or Tuesday night, and it looks as if it will drop far enough south to bring snow to Tahoe. In fact, the latest computer forecast model runs are showing this storm stronger than they did a day or two ago. The Tuesday-Wednesday system is likely to bring as much as two inches of precipitation, and with snow levels around 5000 to 6000 feet, that would mean between one and two feet of snow by Wednesday night. Winds will also be howling with this system, with gusts reaching perhaps 100 mph along the Sierra Crest.
Another weak wave on Thursday will probably fall just short of Tahoe or brush us as it passes to the north. And then, after a brief warming period on Friday, another decent-sized storm is in the forecast for Saturday.
Lots of action on its way, so stay tuned for updates.

Keystone Resort’s neighbor, Copper Mountain Resort will host its closing weekend festivities in mid-April, and skiers and snowboarders can still make plans for more time on the slopes of Summit County. Just a short drive away from SummitCove properties, winter fun will continue after Keystone’s closing date of Sunday, April 8th.
On Saturday, April 14th, Copper Mountain will introduce its first ever CopperMan event. The race includes different themes (80′s, Superhero, Lumberjack, and Beach Bum) and a frozen obstacle course. Live music will begin at 11:30 am on the Red Bull Tour Bus, featuring DJ Bedz, Lez Zeppelin, and The Spazmatics. Then, Sunday, April 15th, join in on the inaugural SlopeSoakers Floating Rail Jam event. Located at Jill’s deck at Woodward at Copper, there will be a pond with a rail floating on inner tubes. This is a creative spin on the traditional pond skim. Registration opens at 11am, with the competition beginning at noon. Live Music will continue on the Red Bull Tour Bust at 2 pm with Michal Minter and Pato Banton and the Now Generation.
Neighboring resorts including Breckenridge, Copper and Arapahoe Basin will remain open in April, but be sure to check with each ski area for details on terrain and dates and times of operation. SummitCove is proud to offer discount lodging for the remainder of Summit County’s ski season!

Monday March 13
A wet and snowy week lays ahead for the Tahoe Basin.
The action starts late tonight or early Tuesday as the first in a series of storms rides a shuttle from the eastern Pacific into the Sierra Nevada.
This system will take direct aim on the Lassen region but will also bring plenty of moisture to Tahoe. Snow levels will be rising quickly as warm air is pushed ahead of the front, bringing snow levels to above 6000 feet. Areas above 7000 feet could see two feet of snow or more by Wednesday night, with substantially less than that below 7000 feet. This storm will be accompanied by high winds that could create near blizzard conditions at time at the higher elevations.
After a brief lull, another, colder storm is due this weekend. The latest computer forecast models are showing this storm arriving a little later than previous runs, perhaps not until Friday into Saturday. But the delay could also allow more cold air to filter into the mix from the north, bringing snow levels down before the majority of the moisture passes over the Sierra. If that happens we could see another two to three feet of snow this weekend, with snow levels eventually coming down to the low foothills.
The pattern looks likely to continue into next week.
It’s going to be a wild end to a wimpy winter.

Friday March 23
A low pressure system moving down the Pacific Coast today will settle off the coast of Northern California tonight and bring modest precipitation to the Sierra Nevada and the Tahoe region. It looks like we could get between 4 and 6 inches of snow above 7000 feet late tonight and early Saturday. Snow levels should be below 5000 feet.
The area of low pressure is forecast to stretch out along the coast before moving inland Sunday. It looks like it will come inland south of Tahoe. That will keep our weather unsettled but should keep most of the heavier precipitation in Alpine and Mono counties.
At least two more waves of moisture are in the forecast for the middle of next week and could bring additional snow accumulations to the region.
Stay tuned for updates

A warm plume of Pacific moisture remains stalled over the Sierra and the Tahoe Basin this morning, bringing heavy rain and high elevation snow to the region.
Snow levels have risen to around 7000 feet in most areas and are expected to reach nearly 8000 feet by tonight. We’ve got about 16 to 20 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours above 7500 feet around the Basin.
There might be a slight lull this afternoon but Thursday is going to be ugly with another pulse of moisture and a tightening pressure gradient that is going to mean a return of high winds around the Lake and in the high country. Snow levels will continue to hover around 7500 to 8000 feet.
We should finally get some relief from the rain late Friday or Saturday as a major winter cold front moves through the Sierra. Temperatures will plummet and the snow will be falling at a rate of a couple of inches per hour for a significant period.
Snowfall totals from Friday and Saturday alone are expected to be about three to four feet, with more possible at higher elevations and south of Tahoe. Mammoth could get six feet of snow this weekend as the hose and cold air are trained on the Central Sierra.
So we are going to have to put up with the rain and messy conditions for a while, but by next week, the final full week of winter, this place might actually look like winter.
Stay tuned for updates.

The last in a series of winter storms to sweep through the Sierra has mostly moved east of the Tahoe region this morning, leaving a few isolated snow showers in its wake. Altogether, the storms of the past week dumped about six feet of snow above 7500 feet in the Northern Sierra. Today’s showers aren’t expected to add much more to that.
An area of high pressure is building over the west and will prompt a warming trend in Tahoe as storms from the Pacific are shunted to our north. We will probably see some cloud cover early this week as two low pressure systems move from the Pacific Northwest toward the Rockies but mostly miss the Sierra. But temperatures should still be 15 to 20 degrees higher Tuesday than they are today.
The next chance for any significant weather will be later this week and into the weekend. A trough of low pressure is forecast to park off the Pacific Coast near Northern California and send several weak pulses of energy and moisture our way.
Stay tuned for updates.

Friday March 16
The last in a series of storms — and the coldest and strongest of the bunch — will swing through the Sierra Nevada today.
The storm will arrive in two waves, one this morning and another later tonight. This morning’s wave is already moving up the western slope of the Sierra, bringing rain and high elevation snow to the region. Snow levels are at or above 7000 feet and will remain there until at least mid-morning, when they should start dropping.
By tonight snow should be falling below 5000 feet, and we’ll have snow in the foothills Saturday morning. Accumulations around the Lake will depend on the timing of the cold air’s arrival, but we can expect another two to three feet of snow above 7500 feet by Saturday night, The heaviest snowfall will be overnight tonight, with snow falling at a rate o 2 to 3 inches per hour for much of the night. That rate should taper off Saturday morning, but unsettled conditions will keep a possibility of snow showers in the forecast into Sunday.
Winds will also be a problem today and tonight, with gusts of 50 mph or more. Getting around the Basin Saturday morning could be a real headache.
It looks like we will begin to dry out starting late Sunday or Monday.
Stay tuned for updates.
